The phantom of Colbert

After 14 years of presence in Bordeaux, the Colbert cruiser definitively left the port.

Under the fire of the projectors, in 1990, at the time of the war of the gulf, Colbert lived its last mission with the active service like escorts of Clemenceau. Disarmed on May 24, 1991, on its return in Toulon, it joined Bordeaux later two years. Transformed into museum, the building meets a sharp success then, with 100.000 visitors the first year. The effect of innovation passed, the frequentation is exhausted gradually, to fall to 35.000 visitors in 2005.

For lack of sufficient money re-entries, management becomes delicate then, the more so as the cruiser, growing old, requires important appropriations in maintenance and repairs. Property of the ministry for the Defense, which could not or did not want to mobilize funds, the building and its management were entrusted to association “the friends of Colbert”

Thursday June 28, the Committee of the world Inheritance of UNESCO, joined together in Christchurch in Zealand News, announced the inscription of Bordeaux on the list of the world Inheritance of humanity, as “an exceptional urban unit”.

I made a photo composition with several of my photographs and the official presentation of the city.

Fontaine des Girondins

Located at the feet of the monument set up at the glory Of Gironde, this fountain undoubtedly the monument more photographed of Bordeaux. A vast program of restoration was undertaken into 2005 which concerned in turn, the angel of freedom at the top of the monument, the column, and finally the fountain with the horses of the Fontaine des Girondins ones. The water handing-over of the fountain in May 2006 signed the end of work.

the characters constituting the fountain , dedicated to a destruction, will be unbolted in 1943. The 34 sculptures will disappear thus from the Bordeaux landscape lasting of many years.

They will be found intact in Angers. But it will have to be waited until 1982 so that the famous sea horses, the allegories, the tanks of the Republic and the Harmony find their basins.

Cuauhtémoc (“the eagle which goes down on its prey” in nahuatl), of the name of the last Aztec emperor, is a sailing ship of the type barque flying Mexican flag. Its home port is Acapulco.

Built in Bilbao in 1982, it is property of the Mexican national navy which uses it as training ship. It is a symbol in Mexico because it illustrates the spirit of combativeness and independence, by reference to the Cuauhtémoc emperor.

For its 5th edition, dedicated to the river’s history and its relations with the international community, the Bordeaux River Festival is offering a program of exhibitions, activities and encounters focused on celebration and discovery.

In tandem with Vinexpo (17-21 June), the international wine and spirits exhibition, and as a preview to the Bordeaux River Festival, the public is invited to learn how to pair wine and food thanks to Bordo’Mundo and to visit several emblematic ships that will be docked at the “Port de la Lune” starting on 16 June.

Essential element of the new installation of the quays of Bordeaux due to the landscape designer Michel Corajoud, the “garden of the Lights” will frame soon already celebrates water mirror, vis-a-vis the place de la Bourse.

It comprises 223 plat bands parallel in the Garonne. On the whole, nearly 33.000 plants will be installed on this garden.
The garden of the Lights “will live” at the rate/rhythm of the seasons, thanks in particular to the evolution of the vegetation (flowerings, foliages, wood of winter…) and by the replacement of the annual plants with solid masses by the bi-annual ones in autumn (thought, daisies, forget-me-not, giroflées, primulas, cabbages, etc).

Water mirror

With a surface of 3450 m2, Bordeaux is equipped with the largest water mirror of the world. Located vis-a-vis the place of the Stock Exchange, this installation carried out by the urban Community, is managed by the City.

Imagined by the Parisian fountain-maker Jean-max Llorca, the system makes it possible to reveal one after the other a mirror effect (with 2 centimetres of water stagnating on a granite flagstone) and a fog effect which can reach up to 2 meters height.
Water is stored in basement in a tank of 800m3. It goes up on the surface using pumps, fills a hundred of small channels laid out under the flagstone then overflows through the joints to spread itself on all surface. At the end of one duration programmed by computer, a system of electro-valves makes it possible water to go down again in the tank so that it takes again its good temperature. At this point in time can engage the fog effect: some 900 injectors laid out in the middle of each flagstone generate this fog before following the mirror effect does not take over.

On both sides from this water mirror, the pavement still extends on 2.000m2 approximately (the water mirror is the central part of this esplanade of 5850 m ²). The whole of the pavement is framed by a planted garden: lejardin of the lights. Lastly, between this installation and the river, a walk pedestrians and cycles take seat as on all linear quays along the river.

Avec une surface de 3450 m2, Bordeaux est dotée du plus grand miroir d’eau du monde.
Situé face à la place de la Bourse, cet aménagement réalisé par la Communauté urbaine, est géré par la Ville.

Imaginé par le fontainier parisien Jean-Max Llorca, le système permet de faire apparaître l’un après l’autre un effet miroir (avec 2 centimètres d’eau stagnant sur une dalle en granit) et un effet brouillard pouvant atteindre jusqu’à 2 mètres de hauteur.
L’eau est stockée en sous-sol dans un réservoir de 800m3. Elle remonte en surface à l’aide de pompes, remplit une centaine de canalettes disposées sous la dalle puis déborde à travers les joints pour se répandre sur toute la surface. Au bout d’une durée programmée par ordinateur, un système d’électro-vannes permet à l’eau de redescendre dans le réservoir afin qu'elle reprenne sa bonne température . C’est alors que peut s’enclencher l’effet brouillard : quelque 900 injecteurs disposés au milieu de chaque dalle génèrent ce brouillard avant que l’effet miroir suivant ne prenne le relais.

De part et d’autre de ce miroir d’eau, le dallage s’étend encore sur 2 000m2 environ (le miroir d’eau est la partie centrale de cette esplanade de 5850 m²). L'ensemble du dallage est encadré par un jardin planté : lejardin des lumières. Enfin, entre cet aménagement et le fleuve, une promenade piétons et cycles prend place comme sur tout le linéaire des quais le long du fleuve.

Cathédrale Saint-André

The Saint-Andrew cathedral of Bordeaux Gothic east of style. It was devoted in 1096. It was rebuilt of XIIe in XVIe centuries.
It is the most imposing church of Bordeaux. The nave, of style angevin, date of XIIe century and was modified in XIIIe century.
The chorus and the radiating chapels were carried out in XIVe century. It is as at that time as the frontages of the arms of the transept were set up. The carcass work was then entirely carried out.
In 1535 and according to an English chronicler: “In the cathedral Saint Andre, are most beautiful and the largest organ of all Christendom”. Unfortunately following a succession of restoration more or less effective, the organ is sold and the pipes melted for the army.

Today it is the organ built by Danion-Gonzalez, remarkably harmonized by Jacques Bertrand and inaugurated in 1982 per Jean-Jacques Grunenwald who is with the cathedral.

This evening, it was one of strong times of the season 2006-2007 for the Girondins of Bordeaux. The Blue and White faced the Olympic Lyonese for the Final of the cup of the League. This meeting had been awaited for several days now, as well by the players as by in love ones with the shirt to the Scapular. And the latter had been given go at the Stage of France to put a heat environment several hours before the meeting. In first period, the Girondins were dominated at the beginning before making equal play with Lyon. In second period, the formations were controlled but Henrique released Bordeaux by catapulting a corner of Micoud at two minutes of the end. Bordeaux gained the 13th edition of the Cup of the League!

The column of the Girondins

Bordeaux pays a vibrating homage to Girondins victims by building this column in 1894 on the place of the Quinconces. By a 43 m in height, it is surmounted by a statue of Freedom To the column base are two bronze fountains disappeared during the occupation, it is only in the 80's that the city gave them after restoration to the column base of the Girondins ones. The place on which it is built is a place of attraction with every six month a festival which joins together the largest attractions of Europe.

In Bordeaux, not far from the Place of the Quinconces, moored the quay of Chartrons, the Colbert Cruiser awaits your visit. This building of the 180 meters length National Navy, built in Brest of 1953 to 1957, furrowed the seas until 1990. It embarked between 500 and 600 men. Affected in Toulon, he became the vessel-admiral of the fleet. Become ship-museum, it allows you thanks to three different circuits of visit, to discover the multiple aspects of the missions and the life on board a building of modern war.

The place of the Bourse, splendid whole XVIIIe of type of Versailles, which gives on the quays. It is used initially as case with the equestrian statue of the king Louis XV, statue melted in 1792 and replaced in 1869 by the fountain of the Three Graces (not in the pic), realized according to plans of Louis Visconti . Located in full heart of Bordeaux, the Pey-Berland Tower offers, the top of its 231 steps, the most beautiful point of view on the city and its neighbourhoods helping the visitor with better discovering the great architectural richness of the city (medieval Bordeaux, Bordeaux XVIIIème century, contemporary Bordeaux, the Garonne, Port of the moon…) and its principal monuments.

The Pey-Berland tower is the bell-tower of the Saint-Andrew cathedral. Gothic building blazing high between 1440 and 1446, it owes its name with its manufacturer, the Pey-Berland archbishop. The originality of this tower dissociated from the cathedral made it possible to equip it with imposing bells, of which the vibrations could have threatened its structure. One crowned the bell-tower of a 12,50 meters high arrow. This one was partially destroyed by a storm in 1667, to be finally shaven in 1793. A new arrow was built in 1851. It was crowned in 1863 by a colossal statue of Notre-Dame of Aquitaine. map
